Custom Artificial Eye

PMMA, custom and impression fit, hand-painted ocular prosthesis.

Scleral Cover Shell

A thin prosthesis made like the custom artificial eye that fits over an eviscerated globe, a phthisical globe, or a microphthalmic globe.

Polishing/resurfacing

An annual or semi-annual process that involves high speed polishing and protein removal on surface of the prostheses.

Build ups/ Cut downs

An enlargement or reduction in the size of your prosthesis. This will only be preformed on prostheses created by Frederick CustomEyez.

An ocularist is a trained professional that fits and fabricates artificial eyes, scleral cover shells, and custom conformers. Some ocularists are board certified by a national testing agency.

You may have had an enucleation, in which the entire eyeball was removed and replaced with an orbital implant. The surgeon then attaches the orbital muscles to that implant. Alternatively, you may have had an evisceration, in which the inner parts of the eye are removed and replaced with an orbital implant, preserving part of the anatomy.

Most of the time your prosthesis is covered by insurance. Frederick CustomEyez will do their best to make sure your insurance covers the services at the highest level. We participate in some insurance networks and are willing to work with most others. Of course, you are always responsible for your deductibles and co-payments. You will always get an up-front estimate of your out-of pocket costs. We are Medicare and Medicaid certified.

Patients are most comfortable having their prosthesis polished once or twice a year. There are exceptions to this standard. Polishing removes the protein build ups that accumulate on the surface of the prosthesis, contributing to irritation and subsequent discharge. Removing this protein seems to alleviate the discomfort.

Short answer, NO.  The plastic surface of the prosthesis will break down at some point. Some people can go longer than others. Medicare has developed a standard lifetime of five years. We recommend having your prosthesis checked every year for signs of deterioration. Your ocularist can determine if a new prosthesis is indicated.
